Hitch (2005)
Directed: Andy Tennant
Written: Kevin Bisch
Will Smith, Eva Mendes, Kevin James, Amber Valletta
Much Fun Was Had By All
There’s something enjoyable about a light-hearted funny movie that has no pretensions as to its own importance. 2005’s Hitch was never going to win any serious awards, never going to go to Cannes, but it did fulfil the lax requirements of any date movie – it was entertaining in a suitably brainless way – and that isn’t a criticism, sometimes brainless is exactly what the mind is looking for.
Following the exploits of Alex “Hitch” Hitchens (Smith) a self-proclaimed ‘date doctor’ as he helps otherwise clueless men navigate the treacherous waters of the New York dating scene, always, it seems in the pursuit of true love rather then anything else (this is a chick flick after all), the film tells the tale of what the doctor does when he too finds himself falling in love. After a series of disastrous dates (a rarity, this film concentrates on the comedic aspects rather then merely the romance) with journalist Sara (Mendes), his attempts to hook up accountant Albert (James – who nearly steals the show) with Hilton-with-heart-type heiress Allegra Cole (Valletta) are exposed (by Sara no less), and he is forced in true rom-com fashion, to decide what is really important to him. Happy endings abound. Weddings happen. Even Sara’s desperately lonely best friend manages to find a man.
As a film, it is saved from the depths of video anonymity by a smart script and some excellent comedic performances. Snappy dialogue and some very accurate comments on the pitfalls of relationships make it a highly enjoyable watch, especially if one isn’t in the mood to take things seriously. Not usually a fan of the formulaic chick-flick I can honestly recommend this movie as having something even for the grudgingly romantic.
7/10
