Review of Serenity

Buffy Goes to Outer Space.
If there is one thing that Joss Whedon, the creator of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel” can tell you about Hollywood, it’s that when you’re hot, you’re really hot. And so, for a few golden years, this writer/producer/director could do no wrong. He had two hit TV shows, and thus the mystery that is a studio funding department gave him the go ahead for a third, a short-lived sci-fi series known as Firefly.
Like his other shows, it featured a small group of misfit heroes who go around saving the world and spitting out fast-paced one-liners like there’s no tomorrow. It lasted for twelve episodes before being cancelled and a few years ago, that would have been that. Now however, we live in the glorious world of the DVD and something magical occurred; Through a base of fans more dedicated then any that have been seen since Star Trek, the show became a post mortem success. Hundreds of fan sites sprang up, all begging for more adventures and once Hollywood recognised that more money could be made, Serenity was born.
Following the exploits of criminal-with-a-heart-of-gold Mal Reynolds and his crew of hustlers and outcasts in a futuristic yet somehow western style world (an explanation for this apparent inconsistency is given, but like all good settings, it should never be allowed to get in the way of the plot), Serenity is a happily action based, fun film with some genuinely comedic moments and an absorbing storyline. Good effects, believable characters and a quick pace make it very watch able movie in the Star Wars vein (it’s easily better then the first two and quite possibly the third). If you enjoy it and want more the TV series is also available from all good video stores.
8/10

I say ironically cause most fans of Firefly seem to be Weadon worshippers, which I am not. (Yet)

I just take my entertainment way to seriously. Im looking for more than a simple distraction when I sit down to watch, listen or read.
Movies are so subjective anyway, as we all say...one mans gold is another mans shit....
