Review of the Ashes
November 24th 2006 22:00
Bring it On.
Okay. It's not a movie. Technically it isn't even a TV show. But quite frankly that doesn't stop it from being the most watchable thing on the box at the moment.
I am talking, of course, about the Ashes. The most important event in the cricketing world (at least for the Aussies and the Poms).
For those of you unfamiliar with the sport. I'm sorry, but you're missing out - big time. Imagine a game that goes for five matches of five days each, that can change from favouring one team to favouring another in less then a minute, that has all the strategy and gamesmanship of a game of chess, and that features skills such as you are unlikely to see in any other sport. In short; it's awesome. and more then watchable with a beer in hand.
And this year it's better then ever.
For those of you unfamiliar with the history - picture this: The Australian Team have dominated the cricketing world for the last two decades, winning Ashes after Ashes while the once great English side floundered. Then, finally, last year, the Poms managed after a titanic struggle to wrest this prized trophy out of our hands. As you might imagine, this year it's a game of either pay back or back it up.
Already (after two days) the tension has been fever pitched, with the Australians apparently showing their dominance (they made six hundred odd runs). But that's the beauty of this game all of that could change today.
Hold my calls, for the next three days, I'm not in.
