Review of Zoolander

November 8th 2006 21:46
Zoolander (2001)

Directed: Ben Stiller
Written: Drake Sather, Ben Stiller and John Hamburg
Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Christine Taylor

Classic Comedy Knows No Bounds

Te he he he. Ha ha ha ha. Mwa ha ha ha
There really is no other way to start a review of this, perhaps Ben Stiller’s best ever film (although There’s Something About Mary (1996) and Reality Bites (1994) are also strong contenders).

Based on the series of short films made by Stiller in the mid and late 90’s (these are conveniently added to the DVD), the film follows the exploits of Derek Zoolander (Stiller) as beautiful but brain dead male model in his struggles against up and coming but equally brainless rival Hansel (Wilson), the story somehow embroils both them and journalist Matilda Jeffries (Taylor) in an assassination attempt on the Prime Minister of Malaysia (how random can get?) – showing once again that you should never let rational concerns dictate the plot.

With its cutting satire and sarcastic tone the movie eviscerates the fashion industries’ sycophantic self-importance and with an intelligence typical of Stiller’s work manages to keep its heart as well. Although I have to add that one of the film’s greatest achievements is to make stars Stiller and Wilson extremely convincing fashion models (the amount of posing and stereotyping involved is hysterical).

8/10

Thought for the day:

Is this Will Ferrell’s greatest performance? (Mugatu very nearly steals the show)

there's no point even commenting on this film... it'll be overquoted until the end of time.

I am not a ben stiller fan except in Royal tenanbaums and Flirting with Disaster, they make me laugh till I cry.

Found Zoolander to be completly unfunny and I only watched it to see David Bowie's cameo.

I dont mind low brow (eg:Flying High and Amazon Women on The Moon are two all time faves) but I just couldnt find teh humour in it

The premise had potential but sadly I did not laugh out loud once.

Found Robert Altman's Pret-A-Porter quite amusing though a completly different comedy..

Oh well comedy is the most subjective of all the genres, wehatever makes you giggle..

Got to disagree with you there. I found Zoolander hysterical.
True though, I didn't think about The Royal Tenenbaums - perhaps I should have said it's my favourite film written by him.
